That's why marine biotechnology scientists are interested in uncovering the biological secrets of these underwater inhabitants and the potential they may hold for the development of new drugs, medical devices and other products that can improve life on dry land. Indeed, the UN Atlas of the Oceans reports that marine organisms are becoming the fastest growing source for drug discoveries. More importantly, they seem more promising: about 10% of the samples collected by the NOAA's Undersea Research Program are flagged for follow up research compared to only about 0.5% of land samples.
